Hootenanny Hoot (1963)

Director:

 Gene Nelson

Writer:

Robert E. Kent (as James B. Gordon)

Stars:

A small town in the Midwest goes in big for the folk music craze that followed in the wake of the twist. The thin plot has some romantic interplay between two amorous couple, but mainly the film serves as a showcase for some non-offensive music from the collection of stars. Johnny Cash, Sheb Wooley, The Brothers Four and George Hamilton IV are some of the musical acts featured. Wooley, famous for his novelty tune "Purple People Eater", co-wrote the title song with musical supervisor Fred Karger.

  1. Horrible Movie with the Best Music Ever! 4 Star Review

The plot is just a bad attempt to stitch together this amazing, quirky music. Fast forward through the dialog and savor the music.

  2. The right music... 4 Star Review

Hootenany Hoot was made in 1963 and features quite a few music stars from that era. The mix of songs is great and it's worth buying the DVD just to see Judy Henske sing the "Ballad of little Romy:.
    It's a great nostalgic movie.
