Young Sally Moyne (Ann Blyth) seldom makes a move in life without first consulting Saint Anne, patron saint of all young girls. Sally's faith in the efficacy of St. Anne has a salutary affect on all those in her orbit. It can also be said that Sally's tight relationship with her patron saint is of invaluable help in her family's Herculean efforts to save their home and hearth from the machinations of land-grabbing alderman Goldtooth McCarthy (John McIntyre). The sublime supporting cast includes Frances "Aunt Bee"Bavier and Otto Hullett as Sally's parents, Edmund Gwenn as her supposedly invalid grandfather, and Jack Kelly and Lamont Johnson as her looney brothers. One of the last of the "crazy family" comedies inspired by the success of You Can't Take It With YouSally and St. Anne is also one of the best of its kind.

  1. Sweet 5 Star Review

Posted by on Oct 29th 2022

Sally and Saint Anne (1952) is a dated, but sweet film, assuming you can forgive Sally O’Moyne (Ann Blyth) and her taste in men. At least the O’Moyne family isn’t dysfunctional, but it is entertaining. The movie starts with Sally in her Catholic school losing her lunch box. Eventually she resorts to praying, ala Don Camillo, to St. Anne to help her find it. The lunch box is found quickly and we are given a quick introduction to the movie’s villain, iceman Percival Xavier 'Goldtooth' McCarthy (John McIntire), later a town alderman. The outstanding cast includes “Kris Kringle” Edmund Gwenn as Grandpa Pat Ryan, who is “dying” everyday; the parents, “Aunt Bea” Frances Bavier as Kitty “Mom” O'Moyne and Otto Hulett as Pop O'Moyne; and the boys; “Wyatt Earp” Hugh O'Brian as Danny O'Moyne, “Bart Maverick” Jack Kelly as Mike O'Moyne; and “The Shadow” Lamont Johnson as Willie O'Moyne. The are respectively a punchy fighter, a clever magician, and a composer. The rest of the film involves the shenanigans of the unscrupulous miser McCarty vs the entire O’Moyne family. Have no fear, all turns out okay, except for Grandpa’s tree and I did worry about Mikes’ doves. The cat makes it, however, even through the house move, which allowed the family to maintain electricity and water even when on the road. Perhaps that was St. Anne’s doing, too.

  2. Surprisingly good 5 Star Review

Sweet little story about growing up Catholic in a certain era. It works as well as it does because Sally is such a great character. It's a lot of fun.

  3. "You Can't Take It With You" for Catholics 4 Star Review

Posted by on Apr 23rd 2018

Movies about wacky families can be a lot of fun, and this is one. The traditional Catholic background is a bonus, especially for those of us who grew up that way. I have a long enough memory to state that the background is authentic.
This movie is a little gem. It is a shame that it has never been released on home video in any form by the studio. The last time it was on TV (that I know of) was over 25 years ago on AMC. Kudos to Zeus for putting this neglected treasure into circulation.
