College Scandal (1935)

Never mind the title and the musical content: College Scandal is at heart a murder mystery, and a pretty suspenseful one at that. Several mysterious killings have taken place at a co-ed college, and it looks as though there won't be anyone left alive to appear in the annual campus musical. The police, headed by the irascible Chief Magoun (William Frawley) are at a loss to solve the murders, so the students take it upon themselves to play detective. It is college cutie Sally Dunlap (Arline Judge) who discovers that the killing spree is related to the accidental death of a student during a long-ago fraternity hazing. The film's most startling moment occurs when music student Paul Gedney (Johnny Downs) is knocked off while singing his latest composition, ironically titled "In the Middle of a Kiss." College Scandal was remade in 1942 as Sweater Girl.

College Musical and Murder Mystery All in One

Posted by Unknown on Aug 10th 2021

"College Scandal" stars Kent Taylor and Arline Judge. It is a combination college musical comedy and murder mystery. While the premise sounds a bit silly, it works here. As the students begin rehearsals for their show, one by one several of the students die under mysterious circumstances. The Police Chief played by William Frawley (Later Fred Mertz on I Love Lucy) tries unsuccessfully to solve the crime. That is left up to the students of course and the mystery turns out to be a good one. Why this hasn't gotten a wider release is beyond me. Part of the fun (for me anyway) in watching these old films is to spot actors who later went on to become a mainstay in something else. The young college student attempting to put on the show is played by Billy Benedict who later became a fixture in the long running Bowery Boys franchise as "Whitey". Also, making a brief appearance as the fingerprint man for the police is Stanley Andrews who later became the "Old Ranger" on the "Death Valley Days" television series. This is another movie that I acquired from Zeus. If you haven't checked them out, you should. Take a chance on an old film you have never heard of before. You are bound to be pleased. I have been many times. The print of the film is good. Remember these aren't 4K restorations but they are good copies. I would heartily recommend "College Scandal".
