That's Life! (1986)

Director Blake Edwards had a penchant for semi-biography. He worked out some of his professional demons in his acid Hollywood satire "S.O.B". (1981). "That's Life!" (1986) is even more personal, as Edwards makes a film based on his own nervous breakdown. The decision was made to use just the bare bones of a script, (with, I assume, some improvisation) and just friends, neighbors, and assorted family members; and even the Malibu beach house of Edwards and his wife Julie Andrews.
Jack Lemmon plays Harvey Fairchild, a deeply dissatisfied architect headed for a breakdown/ mid-life crisis as his 60th birthday approaches. As family and friends arrive for the birthday bash, Harvey seems intent on driving everyone away from him.
We can assume Julie Andrews is playing some "version" of herself, as his long-suffering wife Gillian. She must endure a very long weekend, and keep a personal crisis secret, while trying to keep her husband and family intact.
This comedy-drama, though well-intended and sincere, never feels fully thought-out or realized. It's a biographical sketch of a very unhappy man having a very unhappy birthday, who makes his family fairly unhappy, too.

Very pleased to finally find this DVD. Great characters, setting and realistic life stories. A film to view again and again to catch every detail.

I've been trying to find That's Life for years with no luck. Zeus was the only place I was able to find it. I am very pleased to have this movie.
