A Christmas Memory (1966)
Geraldine Page, Donnie Melvin, Lavinia Cassels
Its the last Christmas together in Depression era Alabama of a sensitive boy and his elderly cousin who was his closest friend. The two raise enough money to buy the ingredients for 30 fruit cakes, sent mostly to strangers like FDR. They spend Christmas day flying the kites they made for each other while Capote's voice over explains their separation, followed by their dog's passing, and a few years later her's.

A Christmas Memory (1997) is a sweet and sad TV film; it is hard to tell which adjective predominates, but I would suggest the latter. It is based on a Truman Capote story, but get that out of your mind when you watch it; unfortunately, he narrates. It was originally aired as one of the parts of a 1969 TV presentation called Trilogy (The other two being Capote’s short stories Among the Paths to Eden, and Miriam). A Christmas Memory is the story of two best friends, a seven-year-old boy, called Bud (Donnie Melvin), and his elderly, spinster, cousin Sook, played by Geraldine Page. Although Page is flawless as her usual flexible-faced, poor soul role, the material didn’t allow her to quite make it up to her classic role as Carrie Berniers. And Bud, presumably Capote as a kid, was just along for the emotional ride, the other outstanding character is uncredited Queenie. Queenie and Page made this film outstanding and emotionally draining.
Of course, Queenie dies, but not onscreen.

After seeing this PBS film on TV as a kid I was skeptical of ever finding it again. Once I thought I'd found it but it was the Patty Duke remake but then I finally found the original video at Zeus!
