A Case Of Rape (1974)
Posted by DEWEY M. on Apr 10th 2024
Long before "Law And Order: Special Victims Unit", this groundbreaking 1974 TV movie boldly addressed the horrible crime of rape, injustice, and "victim blaming and shaming."
The life of Ellen Herrod (Elizabeth Montgomery) is shattered when she is violently assaulted twice by the same man. When her case goes to court, Ellen is dehumanized and discovers that she, not her rapist (Cliff Potts), is on trial. The prosecuting attorney (William Daniels) is efficient but also coldly indifferent. Her "best friend" (Patricia Smith) wants to know all the graphic "details", and even Ellen's preoccupied husband (Ronny Cox) begins to doubt her.
Elizabeth Montgomery gives an Emmy Award nominated, emotionally shattering performance. Fearful, and shamed by doctors, police, and the court, she nevertheless maintains her dignity; proclaiming, "I am a person, and I have been violated. And I am not guilty." The film is disturbing, uncompromising and important. Viewer Discretion Advised.
