  1. A PERFECT SHOWCASE FOR JUDY GARLAND'S TALENTS 5 Star Review

Posted by on Oct 13th 2023

"A Star Is Born" is a well-worn story of how Hollywood creates, uses, abuses, and ultimately discards talents. Battle-scarred show-biz veteran Judy Garland knew all about that; and all those emotional elements come into sharp focus in director George Cukor's epic 1954 dramatic/musical remake.
The original 1937 version was filmed and played with a standard 1930's Hollywood gloss. Moss Hart's more astringent 1954 screenplay replaces the gloss with heartbreak, darkness, and doses of venom. The smug and vile press agent Matt Libby (Jack Carson) delights in the downfall of fading matinee idol Norman Maine (James Mason). Norman comes out of his alcoholic haze long enough to recognize and nurture the talents of fragile star on the rise Esther Blogett (Judy Garland). Judy, long adored by the LGBTQ+ community, even has a stalwart, seemingly gay musician friend named Danny McGuire (Tom Noonan) in this version.
Esther gets a Hollywood make-over as "Vicki Lester", and it all ends in sacrifice and tragedy. But with Garland and Mason, the raw and real emotions ring true.
Judy Garland's talents are electrifying. It's impossible to forget Judy's performances of "The Man That Got Away", "Someone At Last", the huge musical number "Born In A Trunk", or her dramatic dressing-room breakdown, framed against the typical "Happy Judy" musical number "Lose That Long Face". The fact that the real Judy Garland was equal parts resilient Esther and self-destructive Norman Maine is one of the many ironies in the film.
The film opened to rave reviews, but Warner Brothers' thoughtless post-premiere editing, which was nothing short of an artistic evisceration, definitely cost Judy Garland the "Best Actress" Academy Award she richly deserved. Thankfully, Zeus offers the 1983 restored version, running approximately two hours and fifty four minutes.
This version was followed by Barbra Streisand's annoying and obnoxious 1976 remake, and the more earnest and heartfelt 2018 spin starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
