  1. Weird 2 Star Review

Posted by on Oct 21st 2022

An American Hippie in Israel (1972), originally title Ha-Trempist, is a weird little movie. Normally I am not too concerned about a movie plot, but this one was a puzzle. First of all, it was just plain silly. The main character, the New Yorker, Mike the hippie, seemed either high or just dumb most of the time. Presumably he was a Vietnam veteran who, as a teen, was trained by the army to kill and did, countless times. I presume he was drafted, not like the mercenaries in Afghanistan and Iraq, but if killing was truly wrong in one’s mind, then just say “No,” or is that too close to what Nancy Reagan said to do. Some might consider there are some differences between messing with oneself and killing strangers, but keep in mind that many of the defendants at Nuremberg claimed they couldn’t say “No,” also. Mike also claimed he had no choice. In this movie, however, he is definitely making the decision to say “No” to society and is trying to achieve “freedom” so he could do anything he wished. (I’ll step off the soap box.) After two years of wandering in Europe he decides to fly to “that country” with, presumably, no contacts, and possibly no money, but the issue of money never entered the plot, because of... . He is quickly picked up hitchhiking by Elizabeth, the young daughter of a wealthy family. Nudity follows, in fact, there is lots of it in this movie, seeming because no clothes is an integral part of “freedom.” They hook up with another hippie couple and then many more, but the latter are “killed off” by two “men in black.” The remaining four set off for a remote, uninhabited island off the coast. I was initially put off by the casual treatment of the sheep that the four took (bought?), and feel that my feelings were justified by the end. It is difficult to recommend this movie on many accounts.
