At Long Last Love (1975)

Peter Bogdanovich

Peter Bogdanovich

Burt ReynoldsCybill ShepherdMadeline Kahn
Peter Bogdanovich's homage to the great musicals of the 1930s. The film's thin plot, standard for the genre, centers on the romantic entanglements and misunderstandings among six stock characters: the bored playboy (Burt Reynolds), his never-ruffled valet (John Hillerman), the debutante (Cybill Shepherd), the Broadway diva (Madeline Kahn), her gambler boyfriend (Duilio Del Prete), and her maid (Eileen Brennan). All six are likely to burst into song and dance at any time, and they often do (the performances were recorded live on the set, not pre-recorded).  Sixteen Cole Porter tunes, lavish sets and costumes, and an expensive production.

  1. Tries Hard, But Falls Short 3 Star Review

Posted by on May 31st 2019

I am a BIG fan of Peter Bogdanovich's stellar "The Last Picture Show" and "Paper Moon," so I wanted to like "At Long Last Love." Alas, the film is a disappointment on nearly every level. All of the lead roles are played by accomplished and likable actors. They try hard, and the singing is (meh) acceptable, but Bogdanovich just cannot seem to inject any flair and momentum. Most scenes just lie there with no sense of forward motion. I enjoyed many of the comedic moments, but the nebulous story line caused my interest to wander. I would place "At Long Last Love" well ahead of the director's tedious "Nickelodeon," but that is not saying a whole lot. A mildly entertaining, if overlong, two hours of your life.

  2. Burt Reynolds & Madeline Khan at their best, wonderful 4 Star Review

Posted by on Jan 10th 2018

Burt Reynolds at his suave, funny best, Madeline Khan as crazy as ever and a sophisticated Cybil Sheppard drunk & crazy taking her clothes off all the time. Eileen Brennan makes me laugh as soon as she opens her mouth, one of our truly great comediennes.

  3. it's not the top, but far from the bottom it's said to be 4 Star Review

Clearly a thinly plotted vehicle for the delivery of Porter brilliance, it provides a lightweight, breezily enjoyable romp. Sheppard's singing, lo, even Reynolds', is pleasant enough to transmit the tuneful and lyrical brilliance of the composer. Kahn is exceptional, and this version includes her intro "Down in the depths" gem that was cut from the theatrical release. Eileen Brennan is always a joy, and the only troublesome cast member is the foreign star singer whose name I can't remember and whose total lack of charisma of any kind explains why this picture killed his US chances of success.
