After suffering a near-death experience, an executive realizes that his seemingly ideal life has become a horrifying nightmare in this dark Australian satire. Based on the novel by Peter Carey, who also penned the screenplay, the film begins with a deceptively calm, idyllic day in the life of ad man Harry Joy (Barry Otto). A heart attack leads Harry to experience a brief moment of brain death, however, and he awakens with a far darker vision of the world. In quick succession, he learns that his wife is cheating on him, his son has become a drug dealer, and his daughter is a junkie. Even his perfect career has become a nightmare, as he discovers that his latest client is in fact a heartless, deadly polluter. Enraged, Harry is determined to live a morally righteous life, a notion that proves an anathema to everyone around him. Several memorably bleak and explicit sequences may repel some viewers, while others will be disappointed that the satire becomes slower and less focused as the film continues. Nevertheless, Bliss's daring, bitter look at the modern world received a good deal of critical acclaim, particularly in its home country, where it won an Australian Academy Award.

    Happy to find this!

Posted by Jonathan Steigman on Feb 10th 2020

I loved this film when I saw it years ago and I'm glad to find it again. I think it still holds up pretty well although it's slow going by modern standards. But it was definitely ahead of its time in terms of its look at how a near-death experience totally shifts a man's entire perceptual field and helps him see the dysfunction of modern society. And the pace suits the man's inner state, which spends much of the movie in slippery flux.

Extremely hard to find, slightly strange (at times) very very funny!!!

Posted by Tim Kindle on May 14th 2019

I first rented this film in VHS mode, and was sad to see it almost disappear from the face of the earth. Luckily, I have friends who are more search savvy than am I. They had located Zeus DVD's and 'Bliss' availability, and the rest is history. Some "tinkering" with my DVD player was necessary to get the best result, as is sometimes at times to do. Film is complete and both the view quality, and audio track are of very good. If you have a personal "Lost Favorite Film" I recommend you try Zeus!

Cute But Not Very Attention Grabbing

Good quality copy, but the movie was disappointing. Not as funny nor thematically focused as I had hoped. One watch was enough.
