  1. This Film's Genre Is More Crime/Gangster Movie Than Musical Film, Okay on Its Own Terms 4 Star Review

Posted by on Sep 6th 2019

I had expected this to be, at least in larger part than turns out to be the case, a music-and-dance extravaganza. There is, indeed, some dancing and singing, but they are quite subsididary to the crime-and-gangster doings of the plot. Along the way, though, one at least hears a lot of the grand old songs of the 1920s and Prohibition, including a Canadian song like "Darktown Strutters' Ball". However, the crime-plot puts all of that into the backround.

The image and sound quality are quite decent enough if the buyer who enjoys crime films of this era wonders if he might enjoy the movie. Recommendable enough on its own real terms.

For musical history and cinema buffs, this is fascinating. The print is very good.
