Thomas Edison is the quintessential American, an independent, can-do entrepreneur who wants to (and does!) change the world. Spencer Tracy is the quintessential American actor, understated, steady, self-confident. And when role meets actor, the result is a classic American biopic. We first see Edison as a revered 82-year-old, then flash back with him to his arrival in New York 60 years earlier, to his struggles keeping his beloved Menlo Park laboratory afloat and to his inspired invention of the phonograph, the incandescent light and other advancements that ushered the nation into the bustling, electrified, mass media-enriched 20th century- including the very technology that let this stirring movie be made.
