The old Ben W. Levy war-horse play Evergreen proved to be an excellent film vehicle from British musical-comedy star Jessie Matthews. Our heroine plays a popular music hall thrush of the early 1900s, whose impending marriage into nobility is destroyed by the arrival of her long-thought-dead lover. When the latter demands "hush money," Matthews disappears from public view, but not before leaving her infant daughter in the care of her maid. Flash-forward to 1924: the daughter, also played by Matthews, is seeking work as a chorus dancer. An old associate of Matthews' mother, amazed at the resemblance between the two women, decides to pass her off as her long-lost parent, making a big publicity fuss over her "ageless" beauty. The younger Matthews confesses the ruse when she falls in love with a man who claims to be the older Matthews' son. Are you following all this, or do you need a road map? Anyway, if you catch a complete print of Evergreen, you'll be able to enjoy five songs performed by Jessie Matthews, one of them by no less than Rodgers and Hart.

  2. An Oldie But A Goodie 5 Star Review

One tends to forget that the British film studios were turning out musicals in the 1930's but they did and this is one of the best. An interesting story and lots of good songs. I was very impressed with both the picture and sound quality.

  3. EVERGREEN starring Jessie Matthews (1934) 5 Star Review

I have been a fan of this film for years, probably the best musical Britain produced in the 1930's. Jessie Matthews is both talented and charming, with fine supporting characters throughout. The production numbers are most interesting and highlight the star's dancing and singing. After seeing this, I also watched "First A Girl", and found that delightful as well, showing Miss Matthews' stardom as well earned. Your viewing or collection of 1930's musicals will never be complete without this splendid film. It made me a Jessie Matthews fan for life. - John -

  4. Delightful and Charming 5 Star Review

I urge everyone reading this to purchase Evergreen. I did so after seeing the film on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Apparently Jessie Matthews is a legend in England but I suspect you, dear reader, never heard of her unless you, too, saw the movie on TCM. The formula for a great movie is: a great story, great acting and unforgettable music. This movie fulfills the equation in spades. Matthews is utterly, completely adorable--lovely to look at, a great voice, a dancer--this is a feel good film par excellence. Don't deny yourself such a treat. Buy Evergreen today!
