  1. An Evolution in Hitchcockian Suspense 4 Star Review

Posted by on Apr 16th 2023

"Marnie" (1964) is a different breed of suspense film by Alfred Hitchcock. It partners with "Psycho" and "The Birds" in which all three feature a main character who experienced a traumatizing psychological event as a child which was carried into adulthood causing bizarre behavior. Marnie, the title character played by Tippi Hedren, has developed into a chameleon kleptomaniac who travels about insinuating herself into high level secretarial jobs at large corporations where she eventually steals a notable sum of money, leaves town before being detected and repeats the process in a new disguise at another distant location. She is also sexually repressed due to the same childhood event.
When released in 1964, most reviews were negative regarding action, dialogue and even fake background scenery. Both Tippi Hedren, and male lead Sean Connery, were panned as minimally developed characters.
However, as with partner films "Psycho" and "The Birds," subsequent years have brought a greater appreciation of "Marnie." It is now considered a much more artistic, complex and textured film reflecting recognition of Hitchcock's evolution in approach to the concept and scope of suspense--how internal conflicts may or may not be resolved.
If you want to know and appreciate the full range of Hitchcock's film-making career, you must see "Marnie."
