Fortune smiled upon Warner Bros. when two of the most popular performers at a rival studio decided to jump ship and join the Warner stable of stars. William Powell and Kay Francis had created sparks on the screen at Paramount in a few hit films before arriving at WB. Once both under contract, the studio re-teamed them in two gems from the pre-code era. The first was the zesty comic love story JEWEL ROBBERY. Shortly thereafter came ONE WAY PASSAGE a unique romantic drama which later earned an Oscar for its Best Original Story. Under the tasteful and stylish direction of Tay Garnett, ONE WAY PASSAGE proved a box-office hit, and earned critical acclaim. Powell and Francis have a chance meeting in Hong Kong, and soon find themselves meeting again shipboard, heading to San Francisco. While both of their characters face a doomed destiny, they keep their circumstances from each other, and fall in love in the process. The chemistry between Francis and Powell is irresistible, making ONE WAY PASSAGE a delectable cinematic bauble to treasure.
