Product Description

If you've ever seen Fantasia, that's probably the closest touchpoint for Fischinger's work- the first part, the mostly abstract one, was something he worked on. These are like that, but more pure (Disney insisted on a number of concrete elements like clouds and things that distract from the flow of the music and images) and more inventive.

The work is animation or painting or stop motion, set to classical or popular music of the period. It ranges from quick, fun pieces like like Study no 7, which is three minutes long and all quick-popping squiggles and lines set to Brahm's Hungarian Dance, to something like Motion Painting, which is almost a new art form altogether- 10 minutes long, it is a painting that keeps growing and evolving along with the music, not really animation so much as a three dimensional painting in which the third dimension is time.

Fischinger's work is difficult to put into words, but very worth investigating if you have any curiosity about it at all.

Contains films from 1921-1947 by Oskar Fischinger, including Spirals, Studie nr 6, Studie nr 7, Kreise, Allegretto, Radio Dynamics and Motion Painting no. 1, plus 3 early films (Wax Experiments, Spiritual Constructions, Walking from Munich to Berlin), plus many bonus features
