Powered by another stunningly intense performance by French juvenile actress Patricia Gozzi in the lead and with excellent support from Melvyn Douglas as her embittered father and from Dean Stockwell as an AWOL brawling fugitive sailor facing a potential murder charge, RAPTURE takes a tawdry tale of youthful passion and seduction and turns it into a masterful investigation into the peril of displaced hostility and violated social convention. Cinematography making the most of black-and-white coastal Normandy charges the gloomy, violent atmosphere. It's ably supported by a Georges Delerue melancholy lullabyish score. Highly recommended for discriminating adult viewers.
