  1. Enjoyable 4 Star Review

Posted by on Jan 28th 2023

Rhubarb (1951) is a harmless little movie with a good cast. If you don’t like cats, or baseball, or money, then maybe you should skip this one. Thaddeus J. Banner (Gene Lockhart) is a multimillionaire industrialist in Brooklyn, but his first love is the baseball team, pretty much losers. Then he discovers a stray cat with pizzazz, and has his right-hand man, Eric Yeager (Ray Milland) catch it. Alas, TJ dies and leaves a pittance to his greedy and mean daughter Myra (Taylor Holmes); and his fortune to Rhubarb (Orangey), with Yeager as guardian. Not only does the baseball baulk at being owned by a cat, but Yeager’s betrothed, Polly Sickles (Jan Sterling), is allergic to cats. Before the end, evil lifts its ugly head in the shape of baseball bookies and the evil Myra. But don’t fret, Rhubarb saves the day. This is a cute movie, but the on-screen handling of the cat isn’t always pleasant. This was before the days of "No Animals were harmed in the making of this film.” The opening credits include "and introducing the newest addition to Hollywood's great galaxy of stars -- that dynamic, exciting, scintillating personality RHUBARB (by special arrangement with the S.P.C.A. A.H.A. Y.M.C.A. U.C.L.A. B.P.O.E. R.F.C.)."
