Marshall Neilan, a great silent film director on the verge of obscurity, had one last big-studio stand with The Lemon Drop Kid. Lee Tracy plays a racetrack tout who calls himself a "horse medium"--that is, he reads the horse's minds for the gullible bettors. He quits the track for the love of a good woman (Helen Mack) and settles down in a small town, determined to go straight. But when his wife falls ill, Tracy goes back to his old crooked ways to raise money for her treatment. Adapted from a Damon Runyon story, Lemon Drop Kid was refilmed in 1951 with a whole new plot to accommodate Bob Hope, the Christmas season, and the hit song "Silver Bells".

    Rare Lee Tracy movie. A little more entertaining than I thought it would be.

    It is a movie that I too had never heard of before until recently. Good story. Unfortunately, it is an old movie and the quality is not at all great.

    If you are a movie buff, you may think that the only version of the "Lemon Drop Kid" is the 1951 version with Bob Hope. I always did, but I was wrong! There was also a 1934 version with Lee Tracy. I would never have seen it were it not for ZEUS DVDs! Zeus has many unique films that you will not find anywhere else. The quality of the print was good but not great. However, given the fact that I had never seen or heard of this film before, I was more than happy to watch it in any condition. If you have not done so before, check out Zeus DVDs. You will not be disappointed and will find many hidden gems that I guarantee you never knew existed!
