Cowboy Line Bartlett (Jack Lord) comes to San Francisco and meets Kim Sung (Nobu McCarthy), a Chinese slave girl coveted by the manager of a whorehouse. To save her from this fate, Bartlett buys the girl himself and takes her home to serve as a housekeeper. His mother, Ma Bartlett (Josephine Hutchinson), is not happy that a Chinese girl is living in her home, and even less happy when Kim Sung and her son fall in love. Their affair also arouses the jealousy of Cheng Lu (James Shigeta), a Chinese immigrant living in town. The proud Cheng learns to become a western-style warrior by taking sharpshooting lessons from the mysterious Deacon (Mel Torme).

  2. plain vanilla DVD; excellent movie. 5 Star Review

The DVD has no extras. Walk Like a Dragon (1960)

The movie explores the issues of racism, sexism and slavery and is set in post-Civil War California. Excellent acting. (American born Japanese Americans play the central Chinese parts.)

  3. Great East meets West Oater 5 Star Review

I did'nt know what to expect when I purchased this movie...at best an average oater with Asian actors but was surprised to find the movie actually had a strong storyline very good acting and different to other attempts to mix the two cultures.
I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to others who like westerns, especially ones that are a bit different.

  4. Way beyond a Western 5 Star Review

What an absorbing Historical Drama/Love Story/Western. The story is so well written and well-acted that you even forget it is in Black and White! Don't assume you know what's going to happen because the story takes some unexpected twists and turns and the ending is quite surprising. I am a Jack Lord fan and it is a terrific example of his work. My Husband watched it with me and he commented as soon as the film finished, "What a good film with an apt Title song. I'm glad I watched that with you!"
