The story of a young Berlin woman, of the lower classes, who accidentally meets a young man, obviously ill and starved, who has returned from exile in Russia. She befriends him, takes him home and is assailed by the tongues of scandal. She leaves her home with him and finds another home for them both with a friend. Then she learns his story ; he comes of a wealthy Berlin family but is too proud to reveal his identity. They arrange to marry. On the Wedding day the man collapses at work and is taken to hospital. His case is hopeless and the young woman without revealing herself, summons his mother. The mother discovers the young woman who is with child. She tries to persuade the girl to marry her son before it is too late, but the girl realising that such a marriage would tell her lover that he is nearing death refuses to cause him any anxiety, preferring to bear the cross of her shame.
